Best Ferrets
Ferrets can make the most delightful of pets, but you MUST get
some things right for that to be true for you!
Ferrets are inquisitive, playful, mischievous, loyal and
affectionate, but they:
·
need lots of time and attention
·
must have a large, well designed indoor cage
·
need room to play and interact with humans—in a space that
is ‘ferret proof’
·
have very high metabolisms so must have immediate veterinary care if they
become ill
·
are dependent on you for food and
water
Ferrets are one of the most popular pets—but don’t make the mistake of
thinking that owning a ferret is the same as owning a
cat or a dog, let alone a hamster or a
rabbit!
They make excellent pets for people who are allergic to cats and
dogs, and for people living in apartments or flats. They are not suitable for
families who have young children under 9 years old: ferrets themselves are like very active 3 or 4 year old
children and can be very energetic—and may bite or scratch. Young children should
never be left alone with them.
Ferrets sleep up to 20 hours a day, but when they are
awake—usually in the early morning and early evening—they need lots of exercise, play and
interaction.
Ferrets do have a slightly musky odour, which you will need to
get used to. We also recommend that you have your pet ferret desexed as this reduces the odour in
male ferrets—hobs—and helps prevent some illnesses in female ferrets—jills.
They are very clean, and will use a litter tray—a covered litter
tray is often an excellent choice.
There are restrictions on keeping pet ferrets in some countries
and states, so it is important you check that they are acceptable in your location. Many places also insist that
you have your ferrets desexed.
While having just one ferret is quite okay, they do enjoy
company and it is often best to purchase two ferrets together for your home. Also, check out any ferret
refuge in your area as they often have ferrets available for adoption.
It’s important to make contact with a vet who understands
ferrets. Ferret metabolism is so high that once they get sick, they go down hill very quickly—much faster
than a cat or dog—so you need to get them to a vet fast.
